Dumadum Mast Qalander
![]() |
Sindhi weddings are incomplete without the folk song ‘Damadum Mast Qalander’. For generations this song has been a staple of indian dance floors, in its original form, as well as many variations.
The one variation that has not been done of the song is a peppy western one. (The Great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan did one but it was too slow tempo to be used in clubs or for dancing to.) I decided to do just that, in the hopes to keep this song alive in future sindhi weddings, as well as keep it an integral part of dancefloors not just in india but all over the world. I traveled to Bombay, India, and recorded my rendering of this gem of a composition with the help of the following musicians:
Abhijit Vaghani - Arrangement and percussions
Rinku Patel - Keyboards and Programming
The brothers group - Dhols, Saarangi, violin, tabla, tambourine, Tumba, Samba, lead rythym and base guitars, drums, electronic pads.
Girish Jhangiani (Myself) - Composition, direction, production and vocals.
